About this buyer
Read more
The only Oregon public body outside the Portland region that buys rail infrastructure at scale. The Port bought the line in a Surface Transportation Board feeder line proceeding in 2009 and returned it to service in October 2011; it runs from Coquille through Coos, Douglas and Lane Counties to the Union Pacific interchange near Eugene over 121 bridges and nine tunnels, most built in 1914-1916, and moves freight the Port values in the high hundreds of millions of dollars a year, roughly 89 per cent of it timber-related. Federal grants have rebuilt it - a BUILD award with a state match for 15 bridge structures, a Port Infrastructure Development Program award for about 44,000 ties, and a CRISI award for design and engineering of track, signals and structures - and the Pacific Coast Intermodal Port would rebuild it again for double-stack container traffic, backed by an INFRA grant with a private match, a second Port Infrastructure Development Program award for rail work on the North Spit and a state bonding commitment in the low hundreds of millions.
