Rail replacement is under way: NCRR, in partnership with Norfolk Southern, is replacing up to 69 miles of aging rail between Greensboro and Raleigh under CAPPFI, with rail deliveries recorded from July 2026 (e.g. at Glen Raven Road, Burlington, in July 2026) and temporary crossing closures being coordinated with NCDOT and local communities. Upgrades span seven locations: Raleigh, Cary, Morrisville, Hillsborough, Burlington and Greensboro.
