Transportation 2050 is funded by a 0.7 per cent city sales tax effective from 1 January 2016 which over the life of the 35-year plan is estimated to generate about $16.7 billion, inside an estimated $31.5 billion of overall T2050 funding. The plan commits the city to continue existing light rail miles, add 42 miles of new light rail in Phoenix and build a new light rail station at 50th Street. Between 1 January 2016 and 30 June 2025 the programme delivered 11.9 miles of new light rail and 15 new stations in Phoenix and drew $906 million of grants; 23.4 of the 35.1 miles of Valley Metro Rail light rail are in the City of Phoenix.
