Orders Lower Saxony's regional rail — 39.9 million train-km in 2023, up from about 28.8 million in 1996/97 — across about 3,000 route-km of which about 1,600 km in Lower Saxony are electrified. It owns a fleet it leases line by line to the operators: from an initial 23 LINT 41 units it now holds more than 500 vehicles, including 41 Alstom double-deck trains, 98 LINT 41 and 28 LINT 54 diesel units and the 14 Coradia iLint 54 hydrogen units running in the Weser-Elbe network since August 2022. It decided in 2020 to buy no further diesel vehicles and plans 40 battery-electric units from 2029 in the Heidekreuz and Harz-Heide networks, aiming at CO2-free regional rail by 2040.
