Holds the state's rail mandate through its long-range multimodal planning work. Its 2022 State Rail Plan update records an Arizona rail network of two Class I railroads — BNSF Railway across the north, whose Southern Transcon carries over 100 trains a day, and Union Pacific's Sunset Route across the south, which handles approximately 20 per cent of that railroad's total traffic — plus nine short line railroads of which eight were operational, totalling 478 miles. ADOT sponsors the Phoenix–Tucson Intercity Passenger Rail Corridor Study, a service development plan for a 158-mile segment of the Union Pacific corridor selected by the Federal Railroad Administration Tier 1 environmental impact statement and record of decision completed in 2016. ADOT is the safety oversight agency for the Valley Metro light rail and streetcar systems and for Sun Link in Tucson.
